Visiting China During Chinese New Year: What Closes, What's Crowded, What's Worth It

Chinese New Year can be a remarkable time to be in China, and a miserable time to improvise. Family life is the point of the holiday. Trains fill, some small businesses close, and major sights do the opposite: they stay open and get crowded. The 2027 lunar dates are known. The office-closure list, the train-sale calendar, and the visa rule for a 2027 arrival are not things to guess.

Short answer

Short Answer

In 2027 the lunar new year falls on Saturday 6 February, New Year’s Eve on Friday 5 February, and the Lantern Festival on Saturday 20 February, according to the Hong Kong Observatory. Expect crowded transport and a first week when many small restaurants and workshops are shut. Do not assume today’s visa-free rules will still cover a February 2027 arrival.

The 2027 dates, from the Hong Kong Observatory

The Hong Kong Observatory’s Gregorian–lunar conversion table for 2027 (Ding-wei, year of the Goat) gives three dates that matter for a trip. Checked 5 November 2026 against that table:

  • Friday 5 February 2027 is the last day of the twelfth lunar month. That is New Year’s Eve, the reunion-dinner night.
  • Saturday 6 February 2027 is the first day of the first lunar month. That is Chinese New Year, the start of the Year of the Goat.
  • Saturday 20 February 2027 is the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. That is the Lantern Festival, which traditionally closes the festive period.

The table is here: HKO, Gregorian-Lunar Calendar Conversion Table of 2027. These are lunar dates. They are not, by themselves, the list of days government offices will close.

What tends to close, and what gets crowded

The State Council publishes the official public-holiday arrangement closer to the year. Until that notice exists, do not treat a blog’s “seven-day holiday” as the 2027 closure list. What travelers can plan around, because it happens every year in ordinary life, is different from a statute:

  • Many family restaurants, small workshops, private galleries, and neighborhood services shut on New Year’s Eve and for the first few days. A residential street can look closed even when a major museum is open.
  • Major museums and scenic sites usually stay open, and they are crowded. The Palace Museum’s Monday closure has a stated exception for statutory holidays, so a holiday Monday is not automatically a closed Monday. Confirm the specific notice. Ticket method: Forbidden City tickets.
  • Intercity trains and flights are the scarce resource. The railway’s Spring Festival travel period, Chunyun, is announced each year with its own start, end, and ticket-sale dates. Book through the official rail channels once that calendar is published. The foreign-passport steps are in high-speed trains with a foreign passport.
  • Popular hotels in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an, and similar cities sell out or reprice. Book earlier than you would for a normal February.

Temple fairs and lantern displays are part of why people come, and they are also crowds. Treat a 2027 fair as real only after the organizer announces it. A lantern night on 20 February can be worth the trip and still be a poor idea if the rest of the week has no reserved seats on trains.

What is worth it

The cultural reason to be in China at this time is not a longer list of sights. It is the country in a family mood: reunion dinners, red paper, food prepared for the holiday, and public spaces given over to the festival. If that is what you want, the holiday is doing something no ordinary week does.

It is a weak week for a different goal. Offices, factories, and many meetings stop. A founder hoping to “see how business China works” will find the system on leave. A traveler hoping to wander into any restaurant in a hutong on the first or second day will find shutters down. Move those goals to another week.

A private plan earns its place by being specific: which meals are reserved, which city you will not try to leave on New Year’s Day, and which crowded fair is chosen on purpose rather than stumbled into. The quieter winter around the festival, but not on top of it, is described in Beijing in winter. How the season sits in a longer cultural route is in the best time to visit China for culture.

Visas: do not predict 2027

Many of China’s unilateral 30-day visa-free arrangements, for ordinary passports that are on the current list, run through 31 December 2026. That end date is why a February 2027 arrival cannot inherit today’s permission. The arrangement may be extended, amended, or allowed to lapse. This page will not guess which.

Check the National Immigration Administration and the Chinese embassy or consulate for your passport before you buy flights for 2027. Our visa and entry guide records what those notices said when it was last updated, including the point that the United States was not on the 30-day unilateral list at that check. Use it as a map of the questions, then confirm the live notice. A transit exemption is a different rule from a tourist stay, and a return ticket to the same country is not automatically a qualifying transit.

Nothing here is legal advice. Entry is decided by the officer and by the rule in force on the day you fly.

FAQ

When is Chinese New Year in 2027?

Saturday 6 February 2027, the first day of the Year of the Goat. New Year’s Eve is Friday 5 February. The Lantern Festival is Saturday 20 February. Dates are from the Hong Kong Observatory’s 2027 conversion table, checked 5 November 2026.

Will museums and restaurants be open?

Major sights are often open and crowded. Many small restaurants, workshops, and neighborhood businesses close around New Year’s Eve and the first few days. The official public-holiday calendar for 2027 had not been used here, because the State Council publishes it closer to the year.

Is transport difficult?

Yes around the festival. Trains and flights sell out. The railway announces the Chunyun travel period and the ticket-sale dates each year. Book once that calendar is public, using the foreign-passport rail steps.

Is Chinese New Year a bad time to visit?

It is a bad time to improvise, and a strong time to see family festival culture if your hotels, meals, and trains are reserved. It is a poor week for business meetings or for assuming every local restaurant is open.

Can I rely on visa-free entry in February 2027?

Do not assume so. Many unilateral 30-day policies currently run through 31 December 2026. Check the official notice for your passport before you plan a 2027 arrival.
