L Limina China Threshold journeys through China

Answer guide

How to Get Forbidden City Tickets as a First-Time Visitor (and What to Do If They're Sold Out)

The Forbidden City is the Palace Museum. It does not sell same-day tickets at the gate. Foreign visitors reserve with a passport, through the museum’s own channels, starting at 20:00 Beijing time seven days before the visit. If that day is gone, the useful move is another date or another Beijing plan, not a stranger offering a ticket.

Short answer

Short Answer

Reserve a real-name Palace Museum ticket with your passport on the museum’s official website or official WeChat mini program. Sales open at 20:00 Beijing time seven days ahead, the ticket is valid only that day, and entry is at the Meridian Gate with the original passport. Limina can explain the method and guide you inside. We do not reserve these tickets for clients.

What you are booking

Visitors usually say “Forbidden City.” The institution that issues the ticket is the Palace Museum. General admission is one ticket. The Treasure Gallery and the Gallery of Clocks are separate tickets. Some exhibitions inside the palace need their own reservation. Checked 5 November 2026 on the Palace Museum visit page and its English ticket note.

The museum has not authorized third parties to sell general admission, gallery tickets, or exhibition reservations. Its own warning is blunt: use the official website or the official WeChat mini program, and do not trust a “special visit” sold at an inflated price. That is why this page explains the method and stops there. Limina China designs private guided days. We do not book Palace Museum tickets on your behalf.

For the same pattern at other museums, use booking China attractions with a foreign passport. For what the palace is doing in a cultural route, read the Forbidden City guide.

The official method, with a foreign passport

Checked 5 November 2026 against the Palace Museum booking notice at ticket.dpm.org.cn, the visit page at dpm.org.cn/Visit.html, and the English ticket page at young.dpm.org.cn:

  • There is no same-day ticket. Everyone, including people who expect a concession, must hold a real-name reservation.
  • Visitors who are not mainland residents book and enter with a passport, or with another document the notice lists (Hong Kong and Macao travel permits, Taiwan travel permits, residence permits, or a foreign permanent-resident ID). Use the same document at the gate that you typed in when you booked.
  • One document can hold one ticket for a given day. After purchase you cannot change the visitor, the date, or the time slot.
  • Tickets open at 20:00 Beijing time seven days before the visit, and they are valid only on that date.
  • The palace is closed on Mondays except statutory public holidays. If your only Beijing Monday is a normal Monday, pick another day before you design the rest of the week.
  • The only entrance is the Meridian Gate (Wu Men), the south gate. You leave later by the north gate (Shenwu Men) or the east gate (Donghua Men). Bring the original passport, not a photo of it.

The day is split into a morning slot and an afternoon slot. On the booking notice checked the same day, morning-ticket holders must be scanned in by 12:00, and afternoon-ticket holders cannot enter before 11:00. Miss the window and the reservation does not become a different hour.

Official channels are the Palace Museum website and its WeChat mini program. The English ticket note also points visitors to those channels and gives bookingticket@dpm.org.cn for booking questions. The visitor-service number published on the booking notice is 400-950-1925, answered 08:00–20:00. If an overseas phone number is rejected in a form, use that help line or the English route rather than a reseller. Broader phone-number problems are covered in the attractions booking guide.

Price and hours, as published

The visit page and the English ticket note, both checked 5 November 2026, publish the same general admission:

  • 1 April to 31 October (peak): 60 yuan per person.
  • 1 November to 31 March (low season): 40 yuan per person.
  • Treasure Gallery: 10 yuan. Gallery of Clocks: 10 yuan. Each is extra.

Opening hours on the visit page follow the same seasons. Peak season: gates open 08:30, last entry 16:00, gallery last entry 16:10, close 17:00. Low season: gates open 08:30, last entry 15:30, gallery last entry 15:40, close 16:30. Public holidays can change this. Read the day’s notice before you leave the hotel.

Concessions are published on the same pages, and they do not all apply in the same way to every passport. The Chinese booking notice and the English ticket note do not describe children’s free entry identically. If a parent, student, or senior in your party hopes to pay less, read the current concession lines on the booking page and bring the original document the rule asks for. Do not assume a foreign passport automatically receives a Chinese-ID discount.

The visit page also posts closures that a ticket will not override. One current example, from the museum’s 12 October 2026 notice: the Hall of Martial Valor (Wuying Dian) closed from 19 October 2026 for conservation. Check the notice list again when you book.

If the day is sold out

A sold-out date is a capacity problem. Changing the spelling of a passport name does not create a ticket. Work through these options in order:

  1. Set an alarm for 20:00 Beijing time on the release day for your next possible date. Seven days is a short window, and popular spring, autumn, and holiday dates go quickly.
  2. Keep a second Beijing day free so a failed release does not collapse the city.
  3. If you already hold tickets for the wrong slot, unused tickets can be refunded through the original channel. The English ticket note says a refund before 24:00 on the day before the visit is not counted as a missed appointment. A refund before 20:00 on the visit day still counts as one miss. Three misses in 180 days block new bookings for 60 days. Read the live rule before you cancel.
  4. Do not buy from someone outside the gate, in a hutong, or in a chat group. The museum’s own notice says it has not authorized agents.

A good Beijing day still exists without the palace. Jingshan Park, just north of the gate, looks down on the roofs and is a different ticket. The Temple of Heaven is a different imperial idea and has its own booking rules. A hutong walk with a private guide uses no palace ticket at all. Put one of these on the same day as a backup before you fly, not after the app says sold out.

Where a private guide fits, and where ticket booking does not

The reservation is the administrative half. The other half is sequence: which courtyards explain the Ming and Qing court, where to stand before the halls fill, and when to stop. That is guiding, not a ticket.

Limina China is a boutique studio for private cultural journeys. On a Forbidden City day we can brief you on the booking method, pace the visit for the people actually walking, and interpret the palace. We do not log into the museum system for you, hold a ticket in our name, or promise that a sold-out day will open. If a proposal from anyone blurs “guide” and “we will get the tickets,” ask them to say which half is confirmed.

Rules above were checked 5 November 2026. They change. Before you pay anyone for a Beijing day, reopen ticket.dpm.org.cn, dpm.org.cn/Visit.html, and the English ticket note. The Beijing municipal English page repeats the same prices and the same “no same-day ticket” rule: english.beijing.gov.cn.

Private journey design

Next step

A ticket gets you through the gate. A private guide makes the sequence of courtyards legible. If you want the method checked against your dates, and a day paced around whoever is walking with you, send a short note.

FAQ

Can I buy Forbidden City tickets at the gate with a foreign passport?

No. The Palace Museum does not sell same-day tickets. You need a real-name reservation made in advance, and you enter at the Meridian Gate with the original passport used to book. Checked 5 November 2026.

When are Forbidden City tickets released?

The museum opens reservations at 20:00 Beijing time seven days before the visit. The ticket works only on that date. The palace is closed on Mondays except statutory public holidays.

Which site should I use?

Use the Palace Museum’s official website or its official WeChat mini program. The museum says it has not authorized third parties to sell general admission, Treasure Gallery, Gallery of Clocks, or exhibition tickets.

What does admission cost?

Published general admission, checked 5 November 2026, is 60 yuan from 1 April to 31 October and 40 yuan from 1 November to 31 March. The Treasure Gallery and the Gallery of Clocks are 10 yuan each. Confirm concessions on the booking page; they are not identical for every passport.

What if my date is sold out?

Try the next release at 20:00 Beijing time, or use a second Beijing day. Do not buy a ticket from an unauthorized seller. Jingshan, the Temple of Heaven, or a guided hutong walk can carry the day.

Will Limina reserve the tickets for me?

No. Limina explains the official method and provides private guiding. We do not book Palace Museum tickets on behalf of clients.
