Quick answer. China entry requirements depend on your passport, travel purpose, dates and complete route. An ordinary visa-free visit and 240-hour visa-free transit have different conditions. For transit, onward travel must meet the third-country or region requirement and stay within permitted areas. Check the notice for your passport before booking; a visa exemption is not a guarantee of admission. The country examples below have stated expiry dates and must be rechecked for a 2027 arrival.

Begin with the passport you will carry, then look at the route. Where you live, where your flight starts and the passport held by your companion do not, by themselves, establish your entry eligibility.

For most first-time visitors, the decision is between entry with a visa, an applicable visa exemption and a qualifying transit arrangement. Establish which one fits before making non-refundable bookings.

Check whether ordinary visa-free entry applies

China's published unilateral exemption currently includes ordinary passports from the UK, Canada and many European countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Eligible tourist visits may last up to 30 days. The current notices for these examples run through 31 December 2026; do not assume the same arrangement will apply to a 2027 arrival. Europe is not a single passport category. Check your country on the official list rather than inferring eligibility from EU or Schengen membership. The United States is not included on the unilateral list checked for this guide. An American visitor planning an ordinary return trip should arrange a suitable visa unless a separate exemption applies.

Other countries have bilateral agreements with different conditions. This guide is an orientation, not a substitute for checking the notice that applies to your passport.

Understand the difference between a visit and a transit

The 240-hour visa-free transit scheme is a separate route. The NIA's 20 August 2026 notice covers 57 nationalities, including US citizens, using designated ports and permitted areas. It requires onward travel to a third country or region with confirmed departure details. It does not provide unrestricted travel throughout mainland China. As an illustration of the route condition, United States → mainland China → United States is a return journey, not a qualifying third-country transit. United States → mainland China → Japan has the necessary route shape, but still needs every other condition checked. Include all flight connections when assessing the actual itinerary.

Before relying on transit, verify the passport eligibility, entry and exit ports, permitted places, onward ticket and allowed departure deadline with the official guidance and your carrier. Admission remains a decision for border inspection authorities.

Check the document conditions for your entry route

Passport-validity guidance differs by route and source. The Chinese embassy's unilateral visa-free FAQ says the ordinary passport must remain valid for the intended stay. UK travel advice, written for full British citizen passports, states at least six months after arrival and two blank pages. If your passport is close to expiry, resolve the difference with the Chinese embassy and airline before booking. Do not apply the visa-free FAQ to a visa application or a different transit scheme. Use the spelling and document details requested by the booking platform. If you hold more than one passport, confirm which document will establish your right to enter and use the relevant details consistently.

Keep your arrival information accessible

Save your first accommodation address, booking confirmation, onward travel and a brief itinerary offline. The embassy recommends carrying supporting documents consistent with the purpose of entry. Tourist visa-free entry does not cover employment or news reporting.

Where required, complete your arrival card through the National Immigration Administration’s official arrival-card service. The service is free and paper cards remain available on arrival. An arrival card records information; it is not a visa or a visa-free approval. National Immigration Administration — official arrival-card channels

Check the permission and departure deadline recorded when you enter. If the itinerary includes leaving the mainland and returning, check the second entry separately, including the number of entries if travelling on a visa.

Allow time for individual circumstances

If you need a visa, begin with the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your application. Confirm the application category, current submission process, supporting documents and any appointment or biometric requirements. Do not assume that every tourist needs an invitation letter or that an itinerary planner is also a visa-processing service. Build the timing around the responsible office's current instructions, including the time your passport may be held.

Emergency travel documents, previous Chinese nationality, uncertain nationality status and travel beyond the scope of a standard tourist visit need individual advice. Use the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your application, and check your own government's travel advice before departure.

For a first journey, settle entry eligibility early. It allows the route to be designed around the time you can actually spend in China, rather than reshaped around a document problem close to departure.

Questions you may still have

Can US visitors use the same 30-day exemption as UK visitors?

The unilateral list checked on 29 October 2026 does not include the United States. US citizens may qualify for a separate transit arrangement; an ordinary return trip usually needs a suitable visa unless another exemption applies.

Does United States → China → United States qualify as a third-country transit?

No. United States → China → Japan has the necessary route shape, but still needs the passport, ports, permitted area and confirmed onward travel checked.

Can I rely on the same notice for 2027?

Do not assume that. The current notices for the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain examples cited in this guide run through 31 December 2026. Recheck for the actual arrival date.
