Quick answer. Prepare tools for five tasks: merchant payments, contact with your hotel or hosts, navigation, short rides and translation. A practical starting set is Alipay or WeChat/Weixin Pay, WeChat for contacts, AMap, DiDi and a translation app with an offline option. Add Railway 12306 if you will manage train tickets yourself. Open the tools and practise with your hotel’s Chinese address before departure; app features and account requirements can vary. International Services Shanghai — AMap in English

Start with the tasks your phone needs to handle: paying, finding a place, contacting someone and reading a few unfamiliar words. A small set of apps that you have opened and prepared is more useful on arrival than a screen full of new downloads. Apple — Translate settings on iPhone
Our suggestion is to prepare the core tools below, then add booking or food apps only where they serve your itinerary. Download them before departure and check that you can sign in.
A wallet for everyday purchases
Prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay first, using the Alipay and WeChat Pay setup steps. Both have routes for eligible overseas cards. For a short visit, learn how to find the scan function, payment code and transaction history before exploring additional services.
A small app kit for your trip
| Your task | A practical tool | Prepare before arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Pay | Alipay / Weixin Pay | Link an eligible card; find payment code and history |
| Navigate | AMap / Gaode | Save the hotel's Chinese address and exact entrances |
| Arrange a ride | DiDi in an app or wallet | Check pickup, payment choice and phone-number suffix |
| Keep in touch | WeChat + saved phone numbers | Add your contacts and send a short message |
| Translate | A compatible translation app | Download supported languages; test offline |
| Manage rail tickets | Railway 12306, if booking yourself | Set up identity details and save confirmed journeys |
Alipay also hosts smaller services inside the app, often called mini apps or mini-programs. That can reduce the number of separate apps you need. Individual services may still have their own registration or payment conditions.
WeChat for contacts during the journey
Consider WeChat as a contact tool even if Alipay is your main wallet. If your hotel, guide or driver uses it, add the contact before you travel and send a short message so that both sides can identify the conversation.
Keep the person's name and telephone number outside the app as well. An account-access problem should not leave your only contact details behind a login screen. Ask how to reach them if either party cannot use the agreed messaging service.
A map you can practise with
AMap, also known as Gaode, has an English interface and provides walking, public-transport and driving routes. It is a useful option to prepare for a first visit.
Save your hotel's Chinese name and address, the correct railway station and one or two places near the hotel. Practise searching the Chinese address before departure. Check the final entrance or exit rather than relying only on a pin over a large building.
For a museum, station or hotel complex, the arrival point matters as much as the general destination. Keep a screenshot of the intended entrance if it would be difficult to explain aloud.
Use the route view in AMap
Compare public transport options
In AMap’s route view, choose Transit. Compare each option’s journey time, changes and walking distance. Use your own starting point and travel date.
Before continuing: The times and routes in the picture are examples, not today’s travel information.
Read the walking links and transfers
Open a route to see its walking links, lines and transfers. This example starts with a walk to Pengpu Xincun station, Exit 2. Scroll through your own route to check the exit and final walk at your destination.
Before continuing: Check the last walking section against the entrance you actually need.
A way to arrange a short ride
DiDi can be accessed through its app and through services within WeChat or Alipay. Shanghai's current instructions describe an English interface and translated messages between passenger and driver. You may find the service inside your existing wallet sufficient.
Before confirming a ride, check the pickup location, vehicle category and quoted terms. When the car arrives, match the registration plate and vehicle details to the booking. A Chinese address and a clear entrance name can help resolve a pickup more effectively than repeatedly moving the map pin.
If DiDi is not immediately visible in your wallet, look for its ride-hailing service or search the app for DiDi. Open the service before the day you need it and check the payment selection. Do not assume that an overseas ride-hailing app account will automatically be ready for a mainland ride.
Keep the last four digits of the number used for the booking in a note: the driver may use them to confirm the passenger. These digits are different from a one-time bank or app verification code, which you should keep private. International Services Shanghai — using DiDi
Arrange a DiDi ride, from opening the service to pickup
Open the ride-hailing service
In WeChat, open Me → Services, then tap Ride Hailing under Travel & Transportation. You can also open DiDi directly if you use its app.
Before continuing: Open the service before you need a car and check the available payment method.
Find the language setting
In DiDi, open Me → Settings → General → Language. Follow the three labelled screens below; menu labels may differ by version.
Me → Settings
Settings → General
General → Language
Before continuing: This step opens the language choice; it does not request a ride.
Select English and confirm
Choose English, then tap Done (完成) at the top right. If the app asks you to confirm the change, tap Confirm.
Choose English, then Done
Confirm the language change
Before continuing: Check that the main ride screen is now readable before continuing.
Tap Enter Destination
On the DiDi ride screen, tap Enter Destination below the map.
Before continuing: Keep your destination’s Chinese name or address ready to enter.
Choose the exact destination
Type or paste your destination, then select the result with the correct address or terminal. Similarly named stations and airport terminals are different places; check the full address before requesting a car.
Before continuing: Check the destination and pickup point before confirming the request.
Compare the car category and displayed estimate
Review the available car categories and displayed estimates, then select the option you want. The pictured prices are examples.
Before continuing: Read your own app’s quote and conditions before requesting the car.
Match the assigned vehicle at pickup
After a driver accepts, read the assigned vehicle details and pickup information. Match the plate and vehicle with the car that arrives. Have the last four digits of the booking phone number ready if the driver asks to confirm them.
Before continuing: The phone-number suffix is different from a bank or app verification code; keep those codes private.
Prepare the wallet you will use for purchases with the guide to paying in China.
Translation that has a backup
Choose a translation tool suited to your phone and download the language resources it supports. Apple's Translate app can work offline with downloaded input and output languages, although offline results may be less accurate. Check your own device and language combination before relying on it.
Prepare a short saved note with your hotel address and any important communication needs. For a serious food allergy, have the wording checked by a competent speaker and confirm the restaurant has understood; automatic translation alone cannot establish that a meal is suitable.
When speaking through a translation app, use short sentences and one request at a time. A written address or a photograph of a booking can sometimes be clearer than a long translated explanation.
Prepare the translation screen
Set English and Chinese before translating
In Apple Translate, tap the language names to choose your input and output languages. The panel below shows English (US) and Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified). Tap Enter text to type, or use the microphone to speak.
Before continuing: Confirm both language choices before starting your conversation.
Test downloaded languages without a connection
Download the supported language resources for your device, then test a short phrase in airplane mode before departure.
Before continuing: Keep important addresses and verified allergy information in a separate note.
Add rail and booking tools where needed
If you will manage train bookings yourself, prepare Railway 12306 and read the China train guide for foreign passport holders. If someone else is booking, ask for the confirmed train, exact stations and seat details in an offline format.
Keep airline and hotel confirmations accessible too. Food delivery and local review apps can wait until you actually need them; they are not prerequisites for enjoying the first day.
Do a short practice run
Before leaving home, find the hotel on your map, open the wallet's payment screen, send a message to your contact and test a downloaded translation in airplane mode. Check the app's publisher and keep the device updated.
The purpose is practical familiarity. Once you can do those few things, the phone can support the journey without becoming its main subject.
For data, roaming and bank messages, return to the China internet and eSIM guide.
Before you move on
Questions you may still have
Do I need to download all six as separate apps?
No. Some tasks are available inside an existing wallet, and you only need Railway 12306 if you will manage rail bookings yourself. Begin with the tasks you actually need.
What will the driver ask me to confirm?
Check the plate and vehicle against the booking. The driver may ask for the last four digits of the booking phone number. Those digits are not a bank or app OTP; keep verification codes private.
Can automatic translation handle a serious food allergy?
It can help communicate, but does not establish that a meal is suitable. Have the wording checked by a competent speaker and confirm the restaurant understands the requirement.
