Start with the attraction's official booking information, choose the correct document type and enter the details of the passport each visitor will carry. Check the date, entry period and confirmation status before arranging the rest of the day. A guide booking, an order awaiting payment and an issued admission reservation are different things.
Some visits are easy to arrange on the day; others shape the itinerary around a reservation. Establish which kind you are planning before filling a day with timed commitments. A little flexibility is especially useful on a first visit, when you are still learning the distances between places.
Check the venue before choosing a platform
Look for the venue's own name and official booking route. Some provide an English website; others use a WeChat mini program or another official service. Their booking windows, document choices, opening days and cancellation rules differ. A process that works for one museum is not a national ticketing system.
Ask these questions for each visit: does admission require a reservation, when is your date released, is there an entry period, and which document will be checked at the door? Free admission can still require a booking. Check whether an exhibition, cable car or shuttle needs a separate ticket.
The existing Forbidden City guide and Wuhou Shrine guide provide venue-specific context. Use the steps below to prepare the information they ask for.
Read the date and availability first
Open the correct language version where available, then look at the visit date. An unavailable date, a sold-out session and a date that has not been released can need different responses. Read the venue's explanation before assuming that an account or passport is the problem.
The Palace Museum's English site links to its separate official booking service. Its booking flow begins with a visit date and ticket quantities, followed by visitor information and order confirmation. Other attractions can arrange those steps differently.
If one visit is central to your trip, allow another possible day in the same city where practical. Keep any alternative within your actual route and entry permission; a ticketing problem does not change immigration conditions.
Prepare the document fields before you begin
Have each traveller's passport available. Select Passport rather than a Chinese resident identity card or another travel document. Follow the platform's requested name format, and check the number carefully before submitting. Do not enter invented information simply to satisfy a form.
| Field | Your check |
|---|---|
| Document type | Passport, or the exact eligible document the traveller will use. |
| Name and document number | The traveller's details in the format the platform requests. |
| Visit date and entry period | The intended local date and session, including every person in the party. |
| Ticket category | Eligibility and required proof for any child, student or other concession. |
| Contact details | A genuine number or email that can receive the relevant confirmation. |
If a passport will be renewed before travel, resolve which document to use with the seller or venue. For a family, check the required document for each child and whether a free-admission child still needs to be included. A price category does not settle the admission procedure.
Use an alternative route when a form will not work
If a phone number is rejected, check the international dialling code and whether you have chosen the foreign-visitor process. Beijing's official help service directs foreign visitors with Palace Museum booking difficulties to its English website. That is a specific venue example, not a promise that all mini programs accept all overseas numbers.
When the official route remains unusable, ask the venue about its supported alternative. A staffed ticket office, assisted reservation or third-party seller may be available for a particular attraction, but none should be assumed. Obtain confirmation before travelling there to buy a ticket.
Read any seller's cancellation, refund and ticket-issuance terms. If you are also booking a guide, establish whether admission is included and whether it has actually been confirmed. Keep entry, interpretation and transport visible as separate arrangements.
Before trying another payment, check the first order's status. Use the payment guide to confirm the transaction method and keep the order number if a payment is pending.
Save the result you will use at the entrance
Check the final status, every traveller, the date and any entry period. Save the order number, confirmation, required admission code and cancellation instructions offline. A shopping basket or an unpaid order is not the same as confirmed admission.
- Bring the document used to book. Follow the venue's requirement for the original passport or other accepted document.
- Find the right entrance. Your map pin may point to an exit, a visitor centre or the middle of a large site.
- Allow for checks. Leave room for reaching the gate, security and resolving a document question.
- Keep the confirmation accessible. Do not rely on reopening an email or receiving an SMS at the gate.
Have a good second choice
Check other dates or sessions through the official service and read any stated return or cancellation policy. Treat a promise of “guaranteed entry” cautiously unless it identifies a legitimate, confirmed admission arrangement. Private guiding does not override a museum's entry rules.
Choose an alternative that preserves what interested you: another museum, a neighbourhood walk, a garden or a different historical site. For a Beijing day, a properly planned Temple of Heaven visit offers a different view of imperial life; it has its own opening and ticket conditions to check.
Put the confirmed visits into your first-trip checklist, then leave enough time between them to enjoy being there.
Before you move on
Questions you may still have
Does every attraction accept foreign phone numbers?
No single process applies to every venue. Check its foreign-visitor route and ask the official service about supported alternatives if a number is rejected.
Will a private guide guarantee admission?
A guiding arrangement does not override a venue's reservation rules. Establish whether admission is included and whether the actual booking has been confirmed.
Is a free ticket always available without booking?
No. Free or concession admission may still require a named reservation and proof of eligibility. Check the specific venue before travelling there.
