Choose the location and room you will actually use, then confirm the booking name, passport arrangements, payment, deposit and arrival time with the property. Save its full Chinese address. A star rating, a brand name or a successful online payment does not answer every question about the stay.
The right hotel makes the ordinary parts of the trip easier: a manageable walk home, room to rest between visits and a clear starting point for the next journey. Begin with those things, then consider the atmosphere you want around them.
Place the hotel inside your actual route
Pin the exact branch on a map alongside your main visits and your arrival station or airport. Compare complete journeys, including the walk to a metro entrance and any transfers. A property labelled “central” can still be inconvenient for the places you want to spend time.
Think about how you prefer to use the evenings. Some travellers want a restaurant and a short walk outside the door; others prefer a quieter base and are happy to take a car. Check the surrounding streets as well as the room photographs.
A historic courtyard or small guesthouse may offer a different experience from a large contemporary hotel. Ask about steps, lifts, vehicle access and the distance from the drop-off to your room. Confirm the particular room's access if carrying bags or climbing stairs would be difficult.
Read the room description beyond the photograph
A double room usually describes one bed; a twin room describes two separate beds. Check the property's wording, bed dimensions and occupancy rather than relying on the photograph of another room category. For a family, confirm the arrangements and charges for children, extra beds or connecting rooms in writing.
Ask about the details you will notice every day
- Bed configuration and whether your particular request is confirmed.
- Window, room size, smoking policy and any noise concern.
- Lift access, internal steps and bathroom requirements.
- Heating or air-conditioning controls for your dates.
- Breakfast hours, dietary needs and laundry turnaround.
For essential needs, ask the hotel directly rather than inferring them from a star rating. A booking platform's general facilities list may not describe every room. Keep the response with your confirmation.
Compare the complete booking terms
Compare prices for the same dates, room, occupancy and inclusions. Establish whether breakfast and taxes are included, when payment is due and who will collect it. A refundable rate and a prepaid non-refundable rate are different purchases even when the room photograph is identical.
Read the cancellation deadline in the time zone shown on the booking. Check the no-show terms, changes to dates and what happens if you arrive after midnight. If the stay is part of a wider arrangement, confirm which party handles amendments.
Ask whether the property takes a deposit or card pre-authorisation, what payment methods it accepts and how release or refund is handled. The room price paid online may not include a deposit collected at reception. The card and cash section is useful when arranging a backup.
Bring each guest's passport for check-in
Hotels in mainland China handle accommodation registration for foreign guests. Bring each traveller's original valid passport or other accepted international travel document, and make sure the booking information matches. Ask the property in advance if a document or nationality issue needs clarification.
For a private home or other lodging outside a hotel, you or your host must arrange registration with the local public security authorities within 24 hours after check-in. Establish the applicable local process with the host before committing to the stay. An online reservation does not itself complete that registration.
Keep the visa and entry guide nearby for the document side of the trip. The hotel's check-in procedure and your permission to enter or remain in China are separate matters.
Confirm your arrival time before the journey
Tell the hotel if your flight lands late or if you expect to reach it after midnight. Confirm which calendar night the reservation covers. An early-morning arrival may also require the previous night's room if you need immediate access; ask about the actual options rather than assuming an early check-in.
- Show the booking and passports. Confirm the right branch and dates.
- Check the charges. Distinguish the room payment, deposit and optional extras.
- Confirm the room and essentials. Ask about breakfast, the front desk contact and anything already agreed.
- Save your way back. Keep the Chinese name, address and a map pin on your phone.
The airport-to-hotel guide covers the transfer. If you arrive before the room is ready, ask whether bags can be stored and what receipt or collection arrangement the hotel uses.
Use the front desk for a specific question
Ask for the nearest suitable restaurant, the correct taxi pickup point or the Chinese name of the station you need next. A precise request is easier to help with than “what should we do today?”
For food allergies, accessibility or medication storage, confirm the practical arrangement with the person responsible. Do not assume a fridge is suitable for medical storage or that breakfast staff have seen the booking notes. Our dietary guide explains preparing a clear request.
Before checking out, review the final bill and deposit paperwork. Keep receipts and the confirmation of any refund or released hold. Ask about luggage collection if you are leaving bags for the day, then check the next station or airport with enough time to reach it comfortably.

Questions you may still have
Does the hotel handle accommodation registration?
Hotels register foreign guests' accommodation. Bring the accepted original travel documents for every guest. For stays outside hotels, arrange the applicable registration with the host and local authorities within 24 hours after check-in.
Does paying online cover the check-in deposit?
Not necessarily. Ask the property what the room payment covers, whether it requires a deposit or card hold, and how that is returned or released.
Can I check in early after an overnight flight?
Ask the hotel to confirm the option for your reservation. Early room access, luggage storage and booking the previous night are different arrangements.
