For a domestic flight within mainland China, book with the passport you will carry, check the actual airport and operating airline, and read the baggage terms for your fare. Compare the full journey with a high-speed train before choosing: a short flight can still take much of a day.

Start with the journey between hotels

A flight makes sense when it removes a long overland stretch or takes you to a place that does not fit naturally into a rail route. A train can be the more comfortable choice when it keeps you close to the city and avoids another airport transfer. Begin with where you will sleep, rather than the time printed beside a flight number.

Book with the passport you will use

  1. Choose the correct document type. Use Passport and the details of your travelling passport, rather than a national identity card field.
  2. Check the name before paying. Follow the booking channel's instructions for surname and given names, including middle names. If the form cannot accommodate your name, ask the airline or ticket issuer how to enter it. Do not shorten it by guesswork.
  3. Review the complete reservation. Check each passenger, date, airport code and terminal. The operating airline is the company actually flying the plane; look for “operated by” if another airline sold the ticket. Shanghai and Beijing each have more than one airport.
  4. Save the issued ticket. Keep the booking reference, ticket number, baggage allowance and contact details for the company you bought from available offline. A payment confirmation alone is not the same as confirmation that a ticket has been issued.

Same city, different airport

In Shanghai, SHA means Hongqiao and PVG means Pudong. Changing between them is a journey across the city, rather than a change of terminal. Compare the airport codes on both tickets before arranging a connection.

This guide covers journeys within mainland China. If your route includes Hong Kong or Macao, check the separate border and entry requirements before choosing tickets.

Carry the same valid original document to check-in. If your passport changes after booking, have the issuer confirm the update before travel. For international arrival and departure requirements, use the separate visa and entry guide.

Read the fare with your bags in mind

Check cabin size and weight, checked baggage, seat selection, change fees and refund conditions for the exact fare. Your allowance on the flight into China does not automatically carry over to a separately booked domestic ticket.

Compare the total you will actually pay, including the bag you intend to bring. If two airlines appear on the itinerary, find out whose baggage and check-in rules apply. For a stroller, medical device or mobility aid, ask about that item specifically.

Keep your passport and necessary travel documents with you. Check the packing and power bank guide before moving batteries between bags, and the medication guide for medical supplies.

Use a staffed counter when you need one

Check your departure terminal again on the day of travel and follow the airline's arrival advice. Online check-in eligibility and closing times vary. A foreign passport, a child or a special assistance request may involve additional checks; an app that will not issue a boarding pass is a reason to seek help at the counter.

  1. Find your flight on the departure screen. Match the flight number and destination, then locate the counter area.

  2. Present your passport and reservation. Keep the small baggage-tag receipt after the bag is tagged; you may need it if the bag is delayed.
  3. Check the boarding pass. Follow the gate information and boarding time. Recheck the screens after security because gates can change.

Keep the hotel's Chinese address ready for the next transfer. The airport-to-hotel guide covers that final part of the journey.

Protect the connection that matters

If a domestic flight connects to your flight home, ask who will arrange a replacement if a delay causes you to miss the next flight. This is the practical question behind a “protected connection”. Also confirm whether your bags are checked through to the final destination. Separate bookings need their own contingency. Avoid planning a tight connection around an assumption that another airline will rebook you.

When a flight changes, keep the airline's notice and contact the ticket issuer as well as the operating airline. Ask what replacement, refund or accommodation options apply to your booking before paying for an alternative. Keep receipts and discuss any insurance claim with your provider; reimbursement depends on the policy. The travel insurance checklist helps you prepare those questions before departure.

Questions you may still have

Can foreign visitors book domestic flights in China?

Yes. Book using your valid travelling passport and follow the airline or booking channel’s instructions. Carry the same original document for check-in.

Can I always check in online with a foreign passport?

Eligibility varies by airline, airport and passenger circumstances. If the app cannot issue your boarding pass, use the operating airline’s staffed counter and allow the time it recommends.

Is the baggage allowance the same as my international flight?

Check your exact domestic fare. A separately booked domestic ticket does not automatically inherit the allowance on your international flight.
