Plan accessible travel in China around your own mobility, communication and care requirements. Confirm the route from vehicle to room or seat, request transport assistance before travel, and ask for measurements or current photographs when a general “accessible” description is not enough.

Begin with what makes a day work for you

You may need a route without steps, a seated break, a hearing or visual communication aid, help through a large terminal, or a particular bathroom layout. Describe these needs directly. Age, a diagnosis or the word “wheelchair” does not tell a hotel or transport operator enough.

Make a short note covering comfortable walking and standing time, steps, transfers, seating, toilet needs and any personal assistance. If travelling with a device, add its dimensions, weight, whether it folds, and the battery details where relevant. Share only the medical information actually needed to arrange the service.

Explain what you manage independently and what you need someone else to do. This helps distinguish navigation assistance from physical transfers or personal care. If the trip also includes older relatives, the guide to travelling with parents can help with pacing; access requirements deserve their own detailed check.

Ask about the room you will actually use

Before choosing a non-refundable room, send the hotel your practical requirements. Request confirmation of the specific room type and useful measurements. Include units with every measurement, and ask for the clear opening width with doors open. Photographs of the bathroom entrance, shower and route from the lift (elevator) can answer questions a room-category name leaves open.

A specific access request to send

Replace the details in brackets before you send this message.

I use [mobility aid], measuring [width × length × height] and weighing [weight]. I need [a route without steps / transfer assistance / other requirement]. Please confirm the route from vehicle drop-off to the room, the lift (elevator) size, and the clear doorway width with the door open. Please send current photographs of the room and bathroom, including the shower entrance, toilet space and any grab rails. Which room type can you confirm for [dates]?

Ask how assistance and evacuation would be handled if a lift is unavailable. Keep the written confirmation with the reservation, and have a realistic alternative if the room is not as described. The hotel guide covers the rest of the booking.

Request assistance for every relevant leg

Contact the operating airline when choosing a flight. Describe whether you can walk to the seat, use aircraft stairs or transfer independently. Ask about boarding arrangements, the aircraft's facilities and where your own mobility aid will be returned.

For example, China Eastern distinguishes ground, apron and cabin wheelchair assistance, according to whether you can walk short distances, use aircraft stairs or reach the seat independently. Its current guidance lists different advance notice periods, including at least 48 hours for cabin wheelchair requests, and makes approval subject to confirmation. This is an airline example; check your actual carrier and each connection.

  1. Send the equipment details. Include dimensions, weight, battery specification and handling instructions. Before handover, photograph the equipment and label detachable parts; confirm how and where it will be returned.
  2. Request written confirmation. Record which flights and assistance points are covered. Submission alone is not approval.
  3. Confirm the day-of-travel arrangement. Ask when and where to arrive, which documents to bring and what happens if the aircraft changes.

Cabin assistance does not necessarily include lifting, feeding or personal hygiene. Arrange the personal support you require separately and confirm responsibilities. Do not apply ordinary power-bank limits to a powered mobility aid without the airline's specific instructions.

For rail, ask the station or railway service about assistance at both ends, the boarding route and a suitable space for your needs. Some stations provide priority or wheelchair services; confirm availability for your actual journey. The train guide covers foreign-passport booking.

Check the route beyond the map pin

Ask which metro entrance has the lift, whether the interchange route is usable and how to reach street level at the destination. A station with a lift may still require a different exit or a longer approach. Build time around the usable route.

For a car, say whether you can transfer into a seat or need to remain in your wheelchair. If you remain in it, ask the provider to confirm a suitable vehicle, boarding arrangement and wheelchair securement. Otherwise, confirm seat access and space for the folded device. Confirm the driver's role. A standard private transfer does not establish wheelchair access or physical assistance. Ask for a photograph or specifications if that determines whether the journey is possible.

Use the metro and bus guide and arrival transfer guide to prepare the address and meeting details.

Choose the part of a place you can enjoy comfortably

Ask a venue about surfaces, gradients, steps, distances, seating and toilets along the actual visitor route. A historic site's entrance may be accessible while another courtyard or viewpoint is not. Decide which parts matter most and have an alternative nearby.

For sensory or communication needs, ask about written information, quieter visiting times, audio or caption provision and how to request help. Keep the essential request ready in a format you can show staff. A translation app is useful, but important access arrangements should be confirmed before arrival.

Prepare a backup for equipment problems and a route back to the hotel. Confirm equipment cover and medical transport with the insurance checklist; for powered medical equipment and supplies, use the medication and medical supplies guide. The restroom guide helps you ask about a facility that fits your needs.

Before you move on

Questions you may still have

Is a wheelchair-assistance request automatically approved?

No. Confirm it with the operating carrier for the actual flight and type of assistance. Keep the approval and day-of-travel instructions.

Does an accessible-room label confirm my needs are met?

Ask for the actual layout and measurements that matter to you, including the bathroom and route to the room. A label alone is not enough.

Does airport wheelchair assistance include personal care?

Confirm the service scope. Lifting, feeding, toileting and medical care may need separate arrangements with a suitable accompanying person.
